Love is our Faith in Action

Love is our faith in action.  You say you believe, you say you hope for the return of the Lord, but what are you physically doing about it?  Are you preparing or are you still sitting in your own selfishness?
  • Lust is directed inward, but love is directed outward.
  • Love is completely unselfish.
  • Love is an action and a choice, NOT a feeling.

“We can only practice love if God helps us by giving us the strength we need to lay down our own desires and instincts in order to love others without expecting anything in return.”

*The more we become like Christ, the more love we will show to others.  It’s a natural overflowing of our hearts when we understand what Christ has done for us.

We put our faith into action through love.  We put our love into action by praying for others, sharing with others, and encouraging others through Christ’s example.  (Note that it is not our job to change, convict, or draw people in—that is the work of the holy spirit’s.)

Galatians 5:22 says love is a fruit of the spirit; meaning once again that it comes from personally knowing and growing with God daily.

Love is doing.

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.  And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.”  1 John 3:16

Jesus is our example of love in action.

Real love is action, not a feeling.  It produces selfless, sacrificial giving.  The greatest act of love is giving oneself ofr others.  How can we lay down our lives? By serving others with no thought of receiving anything in return.  Soemtimes it is easier ot say we’ll die for others than to truly live for them—this involves putting others’ desires first.  Jesus taught this ame principle of love in John 15:13.
--NIV Study Bible

“When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.
–example of God’s love.

1 Corinthians 13:13 “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.  But the greatest of these is love.”
  • Faith is the foundation and content of God’s message
  • Hope is the attitude and focus
  • Love is the action.

Does your faith fully express itself in loving others?

Oklahoma Article

Sharing this link with you all today: http://newsok.com/oklahoma-1971-vs.-2011/article/3599324

It's a piece about Oklahoma from 1971-2011.  We have such an amazing, yet unrecognized state.  Learn to love it.

This is Love. Part 2

(...continuing from This is Love Part 1)

Love can only come from God, and love is God!  Seek God and find love.  Seek love and find God.

Song of Songs 8:6-7
Place me like a seal over your heart,like a seal on your arm;
for love is as strong as death,
its jealousy unyielding as the grave.
It burns like blazing fire,
like a mighty flame.

Many waters cannot quench love;
rivers cannot wash it away.
If one were to give
all the wealth of his house for love,
it would be utterly scorned.”

Love is as strong as death.  Think about it, death is permanent.  Nothing and no one can defeat death, (except of course Jesus Christ, and only through him can we receive eternal life.)  Apart from Jesus is death…for all of us.  No doubt about it.  Sound promising enough?

Well the good news is, just as certain as death is real and everlasting, so is LOVE!!  The Bible says God is love.  God is eternal and never changing, therefore love is forever consistent and true.  Make sure you understand we are talking about love here (not to be confused with Lust.)  So when I talk about God I am referring to love, and when I am talking about love I am referring to God.  The two are synonymous. Clear enough? hah!

“…If one were to give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be utterly scorned.” Love can’t be bought or earned.  It’s priceless.  It’s a gift.  Love came to earth, healed and helped people, suffered and was tempted, bled and died, and rose again so that we could know God and understand the deep healing love he has for us.  We are horrible people with our own agenda—we did absolutely NOTHING to deserve this.  That’s why I mentioned that it was a gift.  It was given to you and it is now your choice to open that gift, or let it go to waste sitting on the shelf.  We can’t loose this gift, because we never earned it in the first place.

“…many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away.”  God is indestructible.  He cannot be destroyed, not even by a flood the size of Irene!  Isaiah 43:2 says,
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you…”
That tells us that love never leaves us.  He’s always there to carry us through the storm and guide us to the light.  It’s up to us to ask for that guidance and put down our own agendas though!  How much love does our God have for us?

Some of you may have heard the story about the man who built his house on the sand and was quickly washed away when the storm came.  However, the man who built his house on the rock was safe throughout the storm.  (check out Matthew 7:24-27)  Think about it.

What's your life built on?  Is it everlasting or will it fail you when the storms come?

This is Love. Part 1

(Continuing from This is Lust...)

Love is the opposite!  Love can only come from God, and love is God!  Seek God and find love. Seek love and find God. J
Let's take a look at a very special verse I found last week.  What better place to study love than the book of Song of Songs!  If you are a romance reader or love guru, check out this entire book sometime for a good read!

Song of Songs 8:6-7
Place me like a seal over your heart,
like a seal on your arm;
for love is as strong as death,
its jealousy unyielding as the grave.
It burns like blazing fire,
like a mighty flame.
Many waters cannot quench love;rivers cannot wash it away.
  If one were to give
all the wealth of this house for love,
 it would be utterly scorned.”

This verse is so beautiful, so powerful, and so full of knowledge about love.  Take a look at the first part, “Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm…”  The author is begging God to not just love him, but to place a seal over His heart and around his arm, showing that he was God’s and God was his.  I think of this “seal” like a wedding ring.  A man gives a woman a wedding ring for 2 reasons. 1) to show her that he is hers and she is his for life.  It’s a daily reminder of their love for one another. 2) to show other men that her heart has already been taken by another man.
Some girls wear purity rings to show that their purity has been given to God’s will, which means they are waiting until marriage to have sex.  What a beautiful promise to wear on your finger every day; the promise of love and fulfillment in a long term goal.

I see lots of students my age wear necklaces with special meanings.  The ministry I’m involved in has a joke about wearing your “Jesus necklace” to show that you are a Christian.  This is just a joke that came up because we noticed almost all of us happen to wear necklaces with a cross of some sort on them.  My Catholic friends wear a rosary around their neck.  People who have lost loved ones sometimes wear a memorial necklace.  High school girls wear their sweetheart’s ring around their neck.  The examples are endless.

So why do we wear special things around our arms, fingers, or neck?  I can’t tell you the exact answer, but it seems to be a special place for people or things we love.  The bible talks extensively about seals and metaphorically hanging things around your neck.  2 Timothy 2:19 says, “Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: ‘The Lord knows those who are his…’”  Even God seals things with inscriptions.  It’s a sign of permanent importance, love, remembrance.  It is a covenant, or a promise.

So what’s the seal over your heart?  Is it God?  Your boyfriend?  A hobby?  A talent, maybe basketball or volleyball?  Do you put these things above your love for God?  I know it’s “just jewelry” to many of us, but think about it…what you put around your neck everyday really does say something about you.
Also, have you ever asked God to place you as a seal over his heart?  What about around his arm?  Do you want God to love you like that?  What are you afraid of?  Allow him to love you and consume your heart with His love, I promise you won’t regret it.

This is lust.

A couple days ago, one of my professors randomly asked, “At what point does a boy stop being a boy and become a man? He of course, was just being facetious, not wanting an actual answer, but the next morning in my quiet time I feel like God showed me the answer.

1 Corinthians 13:11 says, “When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.” I always thought this verse was just about growing up and being responsible, but as I studied it yesterday, I realized that the author here is talking about love.

Love is a hard thing to do. It’s unnatural. It only comes from and through God. So for a man to purposely love a woman, it is the bravest thing he will ever do. It’s also the most mature thing he will do, because he is choosing to set aside his desires and encourage and point her toward Christ.

Some of you may be confused right now, let me explain something. Society has taught us that love is 2 weeks of dating someone and feeling giddy when they call. They have also taught us that sex is love and that if you have a strong desire for someone, you must be in love. If love is supposed to be perfect, life-changing, and last forever, why do these things leave us feeling depressed, lonely and confused afterwards?

That’s because the previous mentioned are examples of lust not love. Lust is directed inward. It’s me saying, “This is what I want, and I am going to do whatever it takes to get it.” It’s a man saying, “I want that girl’s body so I will feel better about myself. I need her to make me look good.” Or “I’m lonely tonight; maybe I’ll call up ____ so I can be comforted right now.” Lust thinks short term, (I want it now, I need you baby, call me now, I can’t be alone.) Lust is what you do for physical satisfaction right now. It’s easy, it’s natural, it’s satisfying the sinful nature just like we have all done since the day we were born. A baby wants attention, so it cries till it gets some. If a woman wants someone to hold her, she’ll flirt till she finds someone. Again, lust focuses on me and what I want. It’s inward.

So if everything we ever thought about love is actually lust, then what is love?

That lesson will be following shortly…

If you’re in a relationship right now, do you see lust rather than love? Is your relationship easy because it seems “natural” to want to be with him? Could that be because you are satisfying the desires of lust rather than love?

If you struggle with being single do you recognize your desire for a relationship being more based on lust than love? Do you easily fall in “desire” for men? Is this so you can feed your flesh rather than your spirit (lust not love)?

Three Little Words

God's been showing me a lot about Love in my personal quiet times.  I'm still learning, so I haven't typed up a blog to share yet, but while we wait God has provided me a song to share with you.  I have heard this song a few times, but it was this past Monday when I actually listened to the words for the first time.

'Cause I know, in sun shining and rain
Through heartache and pain
There's always a new tomorrow..

What powerful lyrics! "So many people need a change..need some one to say I love you" I mean really, our world is FULL of people who are all hurt and sad and depressed and lonely.  As Christians it's our duty to step up and literally love them.

I'm not talking about going oversees and feeding African children, I'm talking about pausing  your conversation with your bff, looking behind her, and seeing the girl sitting by herself with no one to talk to.  She's dieing on the inside, begging God for someone to love her--but no one has reached out.  It's not her fault she's shy, she just wants someone to love her for who she is, despite all the pain and heartache she's been through.

Love people today.  Go beyond surface level and really ask about how they are doing.  Pray for them, share with them.  Point them to the Christ who saved you.

What the world needs is three little words
"I love you"

So many people need a change
So hurt by yesterday
Needing someone to say "I Love You"

'Cause I know, in sun shining and rain
Through heartache and pain
There's always a new tomorrow

(Chorus)
Oh, oh, here you go
Three little words
It's all it takes
Gotta make them heard
Raise your voice and say
I Love You
Oh, oh, here you go
One simple phrase
It's all it takes
To make a change today
Raise your voice and say
I Love You

Our hearts are one in the same
One voice and one name
Let's end all the separation

When the dark clouds ascend We know it's not the end There's always a new tomorrow

Chorus Love, love, love (X8) Make a change today Say I love you Show it! Chorus (X2)

Samson's Consequences

So I was going to call this post “Samson’s Second Mistake,” but then I realized I am kind of out of order with the story.  The real order of these posts should be like this:

Sorry for my silly confusion!  Anyhow, continuing from yesterday’s post, we know that Samson ignored the warning signs that Delilah was trying to kill him and decided to stay with her because he was “in love.”  This was his first mistake.
His second mistake was talked about in "Should I tell my boyfriend everything??"  I discussed how serious of a mistake it was for Samson to tell Delilah “all that was within his heart.”  I didn’t however discuss the consequences he faced because of that action.

Going back a step
In Judges 16, Samson finally breaks down and tells Delilah his strength is in his hair.  This was both a mistake of pride and a mistake of sharing too much of his heart.  Pride because he had the idea in his head that he was indestructible and telling a woman his weakness wouldn’t hurt him any.  How wrong he was.
This was also a mistake of sharing too much of his heart, and we know that because Proverbs 4:23 and Micah 7:5-7 tells us that there are parts of our hearts reserved for God alone. (Read "Should I tell my boyfriend everything??" for more information.)

What happened?
So Samson makes the mistake of telling Delilah his weakness.  Of course, she calls her Philistine buddies in to test the theory—lo and behold it worked!  She woke him up saying, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”  He awoke and tried to rise and fight, but verse 20 says “But he did not know that the Lord had left him.”

Ouch.  Do you know what it feels like to have God leave you?  Did you blame God?  Get mad at him?  Scream to his face?
Or
Did you stop and think, "where did I push him away?"  When did my pride step in and start taking control?  What did I do to disobey my heavenly father?

Taking the second approach can lead you back to God, repentance, and life.  This is a humble man’s attitude towards God, realizing that He his sovereign over all and we are mere humans who screw everything up when not in God’s perfect and pleasing will.

The first choice, however, can lead you to depression, destruction, and ultimately death.

Samson’s Choice
If you go back and look at the first part of "Should I tell my boyfriend everything??" I briefly discussed Samson’s arrogant personality.  Because he was very cocky and powerful, do you think he chose the first choice of hating God, or do you think he chose the humble man’s approach?

Sadly enough, Samson through a pity party instead of humbling himself.  After his head had been shaved and his strength (God) had left him, the Philistines wanted him to come entertain them; so he did.  He entered the arena with rage and hatred, screaming to God, “Please strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines for my two eyes.”

Then Samson reached up and grabbed two pillars holding up the temple and pushed them up so that everything came falling down, crushing him and many others.

More Consequences…
Then the bible says, “Thus he killed many more when he died than while he lived.”  Basically he committed suicide and killed more people by doing that than he had while he was alive (which was a lot considering he won many battles.)

I think suicidal thoughts creep in when we focus too much on ourselves.  Like Samson, we struggle with pride and often try to make all things about us, rather than God.  Suffering: for example. So a loved one dies, our natural tendency is to throw a poor me party and cry, blame God, become depressed, and eventually talk ourselves into possible suicide.  This is not at all God’s plan.

Even death and suffering is not about us.  If we make it about us the outcome will most definitely be miserable like Samson’s story proved.  And we will also negatively affect more people than almost anything else.

On the Contrary
On the flip side, if we chose to live our lives for something far greater than ourselves or any human establishment, we will see the hope, love, and mercy that God has shown us all.  Therefore rejoicing in his grace and passing it on to others, sharing the joy of true life with them.  Do you see now why God wants the best for you?  Do you see how he wants to include you in his wonderful plan?

What are you mad about?  What have you blamed God for that has been hurting you?  Perhaps you need to spend some time sharing that hurt and pain with God and letting him know how you feel.  Then lay down “you.”  Turn upward and focus on God.  Ask him to show you HIS great plan over yours. Tell him to show you how life focused on Him is far better than life focused on you.

Samson's first mistake...

So last post I talked about Samson and Delilah, and how Samson made a huge mistake by telling Delilah all that was within his heart.  Today we’re going to look a little closer at Samson’s actions and the consequences of those actions.
Judges 16:4 tells us that Samson fell in love with a girl named Delilah.  Sometime after that Delilah asked him over and over again to tell her his secret…each time she would test whatever he said in hopes of seriously taking his strength.  When he told her he would lose his strength if she chained him up, she tried it while he was sleeping.  She had been offered money to find his weakness, so this was her underling motivation.
The thing is, after being tricked 3 or 4 times, you would think Samson would see a red flag with Delilah.  I mean, the woman was trying to literally take his strength, yet he stayed with her…

I see so many couples, people, students, girls, guys—that get into relationships, “fall in love” way too quickly, and then come to me because they want out, they’re tired of this abusive relationship, but they won’t leave because “they love him.”  Even though their relationship is full of hatred, cussing, abuse, and God knows what else—they stay with him for those 10 minutes of love he gives her every so often. Why?

Your father in heaven has called you a princess! He loves you and thinks you are the most special thing ever created!  He has a role designed for you and he has plans to give you purpose and meaning!  Let Him love you.  God not only thinks you deserve better, but he knows.  He has the man picked out already.

Samson mistake #1:  When the first red flag comes up, run.  If your special someone is trying to cut off your strength, it’s time to leave.

Christian love in the Bible tells us to edify, encourage, help, pray, and teach each other—so that by our actions we will help others get closer to Christ himself.  That’s what love is. 1 John 4:16
If the guy you are dating doesn’t live with this mentality he does not love you.  He lusts you.  1 John 4:8 look it up.

Are you with a guy just because it’s comfortable or easy?  Do you ever wonder if God has something more for you?  Why waste your heart on someone who isn’t yours?

Samson’s other mistakes coming soon…

"Should I tell my boyfriend everything??"

Its funny how often times we try to run from God…and it never works out.
About a month ago I had decided to read about Samson and Delilah; I began the story and then went off to camp and forgot to finish it.  Well today in my quiet time I was asking God about a completely different topic and of course, he led me to Samson and Delilah.  He has the best sense of humor sometimes…Anyhow, what I learned in Judges 16 turned out to be very valuable and so I thought I would share it with you all.

If you go back to Judges 15, you can understand a little bit more about Samson’s character—for time’s sake I will give you a brief summary.  In my opinion, I picture Samson as being that tough guy-popular-jock-man from high school.  He is super buff, very liked by the people, and he wins every election or award.  Now, this isn’t the super hero star athlete, this is the cocky/bully stud that walks around thinking he owns the school.  Everyone loves him because their scared of him!

In fact, after Samson won a battle he bragged about his victory and demanded God reward him with water!  Wow…yeah, he’s that guy.  As the story goes, we know that that guy always gets the girls, and whoever they want mind you, therefore bring in Delilah.

Delilah was gorgeous, mysterious, and to be honest—a tad bit manipulative.  Anyhow, she got Samson to fall head over heels in love with her.  After they had been, umm.. we’ll say dating,  for some time, Delilah was offered big bucks to find Samson’s weak spot.  So she did what women after the fall do best; she nagged and manipulated.

What’s your weakness darling?”  She asks him one night.
He  quickly come up with a lie and tricked her into believing it.  Then while he was sleeping, she tried to capture him, using what he had told her.  However, because it was a lie it didn’t work.

No really babe, what’s your soft spot?”
He lied again.  She tested it and was made a fool again.

Finally after begging him and begging him until he was “Tired to death,” as the bible literally says, she says, “Samson, if you really love me you’ll tell me your weakness.”
Ahhh…the killer line!  How many times does that line come up through the teenage years!  We all know what happens next..

Judges 16:17  (NASB)
“So he told her all that was in his heart…”

Worst mistake he ever made.
I have had girls ask me many times, “Should I tell my boyfriend everything about my spiritual life?” thinking that that will bring them closer together…but the answer is NO.

There are certain things a woman must keep secret in her heart.  1 Kings 8:39 says only God knows our hearts.  Other people can only know what we tell and express to them..they will never fully understand our hearts—not even our husbands.

Also, Micah 7:5-7 tells us not to put our hope and trust in friends, family, spouses, or neighbors—but to trust fully in God and eagerly expect him to deliver us from whatever our present troubles may be.  Too often we run to our husbands for assurance that this job situation will work out, or we beg with our boyfriend to marry us so we can have some type of security in our life.  But the truth is these men aren’t God!  They’re just human like you and I.  They will mess up, they will scare us, and they will let us down.

You’ll save yourself a lot of grief and heartache if you put your whole trust in God and God alone, then no matter what change is thrown your way—you know without a doubt that the God of all gods is holding you tightly in his hands, and not only that, but he understands your heart.  He gets the very core of your being and existence, and he wants to help you every step of the way.  He wants to love you into security and joy and life.
Stop telling every man you get into a relationship with your heart secrets.
Those are for you and God to treasure together.

Lecrae preaches truth pt 2!!

So a while back I made a post called "Lecrae Preaches Truth" and now I am introducing to you yet another wonderful song about women and relationships from Lecrae. I wanted to pick out a favorite section of the song to talk about, but I really just love every bit of it. I want you to listen to it over and over again until you soak up all the wisdom and counseling wrapped up in this 4 minute song!! Read the lyrics then watch the video or visa versa, but I think it is important to do both! :) Love you and be blessed.

Lyrics:

Why you let him get you like that? (like that)
Why you let him treat you like that? (like that)
Why you let him stone cold play you?
He's a stone cold player
That's a no no no no

I heard he drive you crazy, but come on girl let's face it
He got your heart deceived, and you ain't thinkin' straight well...
God love you lady, you'll always be his baby
But you using your body, to go out and disgrace Him
You need to leave him shawty, and you should leave him shortly
After this message, I'm guessing you think you need him shawty
No but you need God, your heart it please God
It be his satisfaction, and live to please God

He'll never lie to you, you know His perfect love
You know He died for you, He's got the perfect love
So let him go go go go
To sleep with him is a no no no no

Why you let him get you like that? (like that)
Why you let him treat you like that? (like that)
Why you let him stone cold play you?
He's a stone cold player
That's a no no no no

Why you let him get you like that? (like that)
Why you let him treat you like that? (like that)
Why you let him stone cold play you?
He's a stone cold player
That's a no no no no

Hey, you know Satan like to play you girl
Bitin' at that achilles, tryin' to shake you girl
He's so pragmatic, he's always back at it
That's why you gotta flee temptation, tell him "you can have it"
He's a trickster, loves to tell you that you need sin
Make you think you still a slave when you a free man
Always see men, but don't be ignorant
And fall pray to the liar in the lion's den
If you wait 'til you're alone on a date night
To figure out what's wrong in the late night
It's too late, right? You got caught up again
And now you back in sin feel like you can't ever win
But that's a lie again, you gotta raise up
Knowing God is the only one who can save us
Satan played us, it shouldn't amaze us
Crafty, taking advantage of the way we crave lust

Why you let him get you like that? (like that)
Why you let him treat you like that? (like that)
Why you let him stone cold play you?
He's a stone cold player
That's a no no no no

Why you let him get you like that? (like that)
Why you let him treat you like that? (like that)
Why you let him stone cold play you?
He's a stone cold player
That's a no no no no

Ladies, if Song of Solomon had never been written
And you never saw how men were supposed to cherish their women
And look at Ephesians 5 where they nourish their wives
Is he really that type of guy or are you rationalizing?
Our God deserves glory, greatest of love stories
He's more than movies and TV, believe me He knows that
We be provided His only Son when we ain't deserve it
He loves you on your worst days, you know He perfect
So hold on, and be content, you got the greatest, you single?
Don't give it away 'cause your life was made for the maker

What you got is a gift, don't waste it
Temptation be lookin' good, don't taste it
I told you back in '05 you should've waited, waited, waited
Haha, you remember wait? Hey, if you lookin' for love, you need to find God.

Why you let him get you like that? (like that)
Why you let him treat you like that? (like that)
Why you let him stone cold play you?
He's a stone cold player
That's a no no no no

"Crazy Girl"

So a girlfriend of mine and I were just texting each other and I called her a "crazy girl." We then talked about the new Eli Young Band song called crazy girl and how sweet it was. She said she would cry if a guy sang it to her. I said I cry just thinking about it!

What girl wouldn't want to be told they were loved like crazy?? In fact, I'm willing to bet every girl's heart beats faster when that song comes on the radio. We desire very deeply to be loved and fought for.

Lord knows the men in our lives let us down often enough--but what if I told you there was one man who gave his life for you, loves you like crazy, and will never ever leave you? If you don't believe it you must be crazy girl.

Here's to you, from Jesus himself...

Stop searching for a man to sing this to you, the lover of your soul already is. <3

Computers and Stuff

Note to the world:

I hate email.  I hate being on the phone for things other than friendship and fellowship.  I very strongly dislike keeping up with the newest technologies, and computers hurt my back, neck, and eyes.  In fact, computers just irritate the fire out of me.  I don't like sitting in front of a piece of metal for hours upon hours in order to get my work finished.

I want to do everything face to face, person to person.  However, I have noticed that in this time and age there is  virtually no job in which you don't use a computer.

The hospice nurse that came to check on my Grandma yesterday used a computer the entire time! This was a house visit--a nurse--on a computer!  Ugh I hate it.  I think it's rude and impersonal and it consumes more time than it saves.

So why is my major Public Relations? :/

"Living Chocolate"

Last night I was hanging out with a girlfriend of mine when we started discussing what we as women go to for comfort rather than God. Obviously the first thing on our list was men!

You know the feelingof security and protection you get from being around a man—whether he is a good man or not, the fact that he is a man speaks something to a woman’s soul. It’s like we need that stability of someone stronger than us in our life, and so we run to the first thing that halfway fits that description.

Because of this action, our hearts and then mutilated and shattered when that man shares his protection with other women, or when he takes away our security by moving around to a different female.

Second on our list was chocolate. I think we all know what I’m talking about. After your heart gets stomped on by the fake security of a man, who’s the first person you turn too—before your best girl friend even…CHOCOLATE!

Where the idea that chocolate makes you feel better came from, I have no idea—but I’m not going to fight it. We all know how that sweet taste of Hershey’s tastes when you need it the most. Like heaven in your mouth, everything gets a little bit better…for about 30 minutes. Then you wake up and realize you still feel like crap, your heart isn’t fixed, and on top of that now you’re gaining weight!

…At this point in our conversation we were supernaturally hit with the best t-shirt design/ life quote EVER!! “Living Chocolate.” John 4:14

Some of you may have instantly understood that, others of you are probably looking at this computer as if it were a middle school boy telling a joke that isn’t funny. Either way, let me explain. In John chapter 4 Jesus is at the well with a woman who has seen more heartache than a soap opera.

This woman was similar to many of us women today; she never found her security. All her life she fled from man to man, searching for that protection, that fulfillment, that something to give her happiness and meaning. However after 5 husbands and 5 divorces she was still completely miserable and unsure of what true love looked like. Her whole life had been fed with lies, pain, and heartache. If she were with us now I’m sure she would tell you she had more than her share of double chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream (which obviously never helped much either.)

It is at this point in her life where she reaches true desperation. She searched everywhere, tried everything—and now she’s at the end of her rope. No husband, no money, no meaning in life. She bottled all of her misery up inside her and continued in her daily routine as if nothing was wrong. However it was in her dreaded daily routine that something amazing happened.

As she was miserably pulling up a heavy bucket of water so her thirst might be quenched, a man from the other side walked up. She sees this man and knows it is against social rules for a woman from Samaria to speak to, or even associate with his kind. Decidingly, she keeps her head down and once again hides her shame and pain. But at that moment the man opens his mouth and says, “Will you give me a drink?”

Confused, she snaps back with the phrase, “Why are you talking to me?? You’re a Jew; I’m a Samaritan...ew.” With a heart breaking for her Jesus replied, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

Not understanding the power of his words, she begins to ask questions—frustrated with this man interfering with her daily routine. She had finally gotten this part of her life down. Show no emotion, share no feelings, and do the daily routine—now why was this guy trying to complicate things? The last thing she needed was a lawsuit for talking to a Jewish man!

In reference to her confusion about the “living water,” Jesus points to her bucket and says, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

After further debate and discussion the woman began to understand. She got it. Broken hearted and sobbing with a desire for righteousness, she looked up to Jesus and said, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.” And Jesus went on to heal her and give her true life.

You see, as humans we tend to put our heart, life, and meaning in the hands of other humans—which always leaves us hurt and disappointed. Then we try to fill that void with shopping, food, or of course chocolate—which only helps temporarily. But the good news is that Jesus wants to be your everlasting comforter. He wants to be the water that fully satisfies you forever. He wants to be your “Living Chocolate”—a chocolate that satisfies eternally, heals your hurts, and eventually brings others to the goodness of its powers.

Not a day goes by that God doesn’t look at our broken hearts and say, “Daughter, let me hold you. I want to fix the broken pieces for you. All you have to do is ask me and I will.”

2 Corinthians 1:3-4a

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles…”
