Sisterchicks "Take Flight": Devotional Review

A few years ago I found a site called "Blogging for Books."  It is a Christian publishing company that sends bloggers books for free with the promise of receiving a book review in return.  I love this system and am excited to begin using it regularly again.  If you are a blogger you should definitely look into this site!

I have reviewed lots of books before, but never a devotional, so I decided to take a step out of my comfort zone and do just that.  "Take Flight" is the devotional I picked out and am now reviewing.

"Take Flight" is the first of a series of devotionals called "Sisterchicks Devotionals."  Robin Jones Gunn and Cindy Hannan are the authors, or "sisterchicks" of the book.  They describe a "Sisterchick" as "a friend who shares the deepest wonders of your heart, loves you like a sister, and provides a reality check when you are acting like a brat."

The devotionals in "Take Flight" are based around this idea of "Sisterchicks" and makes the series great for a woman-to-woman bible study or friend-to-friend devotional time.

Robin Gunn is the author of the "Christy Miller Series" and co-author of "Praying for Your Future Husband" (sounds like another book I'd like to review.)  Gunn has written around 80 other books, making her a best-selling author of 4.5 million books sold worldwide.  She now resides in Hawaii with her husband when she is not traveling the globe speaking to the masses.

Gunn's partner in crime, Cindy Hannan has been by her side for more than 10 years.  Hannan and her husband, Matt have been married 31 years and have successfully raised two children.

In "Take Flight" Gunn and Hannan take turns sharing lessons on topics ranging from hospitality and friendship to worship and wisdom.  The book is divided into four sections and 3-4 chapters within each section.  Each chapter is laid out into two parts.  First is a short story "From Robin's Nest" then Hannan ties in biblical meaning and application to the story in the second part, "From Cindy's Perch."

The devotional is careful to leave room for the reader to journal her own thoughts, or "peeps" as Gunn and Hannan call it.

Overall the devotional is quite clever, charming and comical.  While I didn't feel especially challenged in my faith, I did catch a glimpse of what biblical sisterhood is all about and how this can and should be a part of my everyday living.  I do feel that I would have pulled more out of it and enjoyed it more had I shared it with my own "sisterchicks."  Perhaps now that I know what the series is all about, I can start my own circle of ladies to share this with.    I suggest the same to other ladies looking for some great fellowship.

"I received this book for free from Blogging for Books for this review."

Top 10 Reads for October '13

So I haven't done this in a while but I always enjoy compiling lists of awesome stuff.  This month I just really ran into a bunch of neat posts and sites and things so I thought I would combine them all and share them with you all.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I do, and feel free to post your own links in the comment section!

OCTOBER 2013
  1. Lyrical Life Lessons...from Hello Giggles  This is a post about the song "It's Time" by Imagine Dragons and how it applies to people in their 20's.  Since I am of that age group I not only found this post creative and intriguing, but it also inspired me to write my own post about this song..hopefully soon.  Great post though.
  2. This image from Pinterest
  3. 19 Reasons Why Being Single is Pretty Awesome: Buzzfeed - You gotta love BuzzFeed!  This is a hip and funny list of reasons to appreciate life as is.  Again, it goes along with #2 and my post from earlier this week.  I thought it was pretty true and funny!
  4. Seth Godin: On Owning It - Super short and too the point encouraging piece on making your dreams come true.  Love it!
  5. Single and Not Waiting by Converge- A friend of mine sent me this post and the next one (#3 on the list) the day after I posted "Single Ladies! It's October 2013!"   I thought she sent them to me as a follow up to my posts, but turns out she hadn't even seen mine!  I took that as one of those God threads where he ties things together without us realizing it.  :)  Gotta love him.  Anyhow this article has more great advice for single people and actually sounds like a rehash of mine, except maybe better. :)
  6. GirlTalk:  A Woman to Follow- This one is really one of my favorites.  I haven't read anything else quite like it yet, but it is a post about female mentorship and what to look for in a mentor.  I really liked it because it pointed out that age, even spiritual age, has nothing to do with it.  I especially liked the line about looking for someone with "love for family and church."  That puts it into perspective for me.  Thanks GirlTalk.
  7. Another Pin:
  8. Twenty-Two - I swear I'm not trying to be lame or overpromote myself, but you know the times when you go back and read an old prayer journal entry and it helps redirect your life and remind you what's important.  Well that has happened to me lately with this post.  I have reread it a dozen times lately, checking myself to see if I am getting what I want out of this year of my life.
  9. Following God and Farming: Storyline Blog- Exxcceellennt post on figuring out what to do vocationally with your life.  Donald Miller always gets it.
  10. One Drop, a song by Plumb:

Hope you all enjoyed my list!  Here's to making November another great month! :)

Top Finds of February!

Happy Friday everyone!  Hope you are all having a wonderful morning to get your weekend started.  Today's post is actually a compilation of posts.  Forunately, I have been doing extensive blog reading, link searching, and Facebook posting throughout the month of February, and I thought it would be most appropriate to share these good finds with you.   Check out my top 10 finds for this month:

     10.  As I pointed  out  in Wednesday's post "Sacred Secrets of 'The Vow,'" I found this article from Fox News regarding "The Vow," and it has really changed my entire perspective on the plot line and film.  In this article the real life couple is interviewed.  Throughout the interview the couple mentions their reliance on God, and how their story would be nothing without him.  Check it out: Fox News Story: The Vow

     9.  One of my friends shared this link with me on Facebook early in February, and I absolutley loved it.  Mark Dricsoll never ceased to amaze me with the spiritual wisdom and truth that flows out of him.  This particular article speaks to the men, in regards to their finances.  Good stuff. Mark Driscoll: Finance Before Marriage?

     8.  Some of you may have noticed my lack of content during Valentine's week, (Note: It wasn't because I had a stream of endless dates with dreamy men.)  But fortunatley, some of you found my Valentine's Post from last year, which has quickly risen to the top of my "Popular Posts" list for this month, so in case you missed it: My Valentine's Gift From God (2011.)

     7. Several of my friends stumbled upon this video in February.  I think that is a good thing, because the message of this former Victoria's Secret Model needs to be heard.  I admire this woman and her husband.  Check it out: Victoria's Secret Model Quits.

     6. I have never watched "19 Kids and Counting," nor have I fallen into the fad of obsessively reading magazines about the Duggars, but somehow I fell upon this article that gave Michelle Duggar's Tips for a Healthy Marriage.  Surprisingly, I LOVED it!!  So much in fact, I found the whole Sermon Outline.  Check out her valuable message on marriage here.

     5.  Through twists and turns of virtual fate, I suppose, I found an inspiring young blogger, much like myself, who openly and honestly writes about her times with Jesus, adventures in learning about Church planting, and everything in between.  I have come to love her blog in a few short days.  Everyone, meet Breanna and her blog: A Day in the Life of a Crash Team Member.

    4. Although I haven't read the entire thing yet, my friend Andrea has persistently been talking to me about this innovative method for teaching biblical dating.  Obviously being a genius, Matt Lantz created a blook, which is a combined blog and book--I love it!  In his blook, Lantz gives A Method for Dating.

    3.  A brand new blog in the making, LeaNotonUrOwn, is an insightful blog featuring..well, only two posts, but there is sure to be more!  I fell in love with the article "Hands" and it's wisdom that is foundational to discovering truths.  Grab hold of it here.

     2. The Theology of Falling, by Sarah Cunningham, led me to a week-long reflection of my life.  Do I take enough risks?  Am I allowing God to surprise me with an adventuresome spirit?  This guest post on Donald Miller's blog is definitely worth reading.

   1.  With a name like "Just Marinating," you know this blog has to be good.  What a wonderful way to describe meditating on the word!  Derwin L. Gray's post from February 10th is a wonderful article about recognizing when you know you are ready to date.  How do you know..?

Hope you all enjoyed my countdown for this month!  Feel free to leave your own favorites in the comment section below! :)

Let's Expand Your View of the Blogworld!!

Well today has already been a spontaneous morning!  I had planned to go running, but got turned down by the large amounts of rain.  I had planned to write a lengthy blog, but got distracted by reading other blogs, then by stopping to take my roommate to school.  Anyhow, because of all this extemporaneousness, I thought I'd just post a fun and unusual post for you all!

In this post I would like to recommend to you all other blogging sites similar to this one!  Why would I do that? Because I am a natural promoter and cheerleader.  I love helping people promote and accelerate things they are passionate about (hence the PR major.)  Also, I think it is just good to have as many good blogs on your favorites bar as you can!

Now, I know from direct conversation that many of you who read my blog are very unfamiliar with the whole world of blogging, and that's okay!  I will just take this opportunity to explain a few things to you.

  1. A GREAT way to find other blogs I recommend is by looking at my BlogRoll.  This is on the left side of the screen, underneath my Blog Archive.  A BlogRoll is a list of blogs I have personally selected as my favorites.  I have compiled this list for two reasons.  One-it helps these wonderful blogs get their name out there more, and two, it gives you as a reader, more resources.
  2. If you scroll down just a bit further (you might need to open another window so you can read and see what I'm talking about,) you will see several icons, or what look like "ads" on the sides of the page.  These are links to other sites as well.  On the left is one called "Girls, God, and the Good Life."  This is an excellent blog written by several women who are passionate about helping women glorify God!  I love reading about their day-to-day experiences.  Next, if you'll look to the right you will see "Blog Oklahoma."  this is a blog community I have joined that features only blogs from Oklahomans.  Because I am a big OK advocate, I love reading other people's blogs from around our great state!
  3. Finally, if you scroll all the way down to the very bottom, you will see a list of my favorite books and a list of other people's favorite posts from Divine Dating.

Enough about my site, here are the top 3 blog posts I am recommending to you today in place of my God-centered post. :) Hope you all enjoy as much as I do!
Love you all and Happy Reading! :)

Alisson's Story-4

(Continuing from Alisson's Story-3)

 ...Later that night Julie dragged me to the BCM on campus. She said fellowship would be good for me. Surprisingly, the message turned out to be about relationships, and how without God they are like a flat tire- going nowhere. During worship the band sang “Open Hands,” by Matt Papa. As soon as I heard it tears started streaming down my face.  How could God’s grace be so good but so painful?  Julie just wrapped her arm around me tight and we sang together. After the song was over she turned to me and said, “Wasn’t that awesome?” I looked at her and said, “It feels so much better when it’s not conviction but grace.”

 Later that night I was talking to Mandy about how broken I felt. She told me to let God comfort me! “How do you do that?” I asked.  She told me to start reading in Isaiah 40 which is about God comforting His people. I told her I didn’t understand and that I would talk to her more about it in the morning.
          The next morning I was up and reading some of Mandy’s blogs and came across the last of a series she was finishing about Samson being mad at God. All of a sudden a light bulb came on in my head. I was mad at God for answering my prayer! I’m sure God was just shaking his head at me thinking, “Women… they never know what they want.”

After I realized I was mad at God I began to feel bad and immediately made it right with Him.   After I did this I went to do my quiet time and figured I’d give Isaiah 40 and on another try. It finally made sense! Isaiah 41:10 told me to fear not for God was with me! But the big one that caught my eye was in Isaiah 14-18. Through this verse God showed me that there was more pain in the break up because I wasn’t obeying Him before.  Then He said when you get tired of making your own plans and you get too overwhelmed, I’m here and I won’t leave you!  He also told me that He will open doors and rivers where you never imagined!  God was there to take care of me.
Sometimes I think we forget that God created the universe and everything in it. Mathew 11:28 says, “Come to me, all of you who are tired and have heavy loads, and I will give you rest,” and that is exactly what I am doing.

Maybe you too, like Alisson are running from God.  Maybe you aren't seeking his will in a certain area of your life, therefore you feel like he is far from you.  Whatever your situation,  you can find the same freedom Alisson did if you just let God be God.  Lay down your heavy loads, your burdens, your fears, your idols--everything.  Lay it down and pick up God's will.  Freedom comes in letting go and letting God.

This is the last post on the series of Alisson's story.  I really recommend you sit down and read all 4 parts in one setting some time.  It brought tears to my eyes and reaffirmed God's amazing love and grace for us.  If you have a similar story to share, comment below or email it to divinedatingforgirls@gmail.com.  God bless.

He loves me...He love me not...

A couple weeks ago I found this really great blog by Anna Bachinsky (http://annabachinsky.wordpress.com/) I encourage you to go check it out sometime! Anyhow I loved this particular post of hers, and after getting her permission, I decided to share it with you all! Enjoy :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He loves me…he loves me not…
I remember those hot summer days (which rarely happen in Washington) when I was a little girl – I would spend the night at my grandma’s house and just chill outside in the backyard during my free time. She had flowers all around her house and one of my favorite things to do was go rip one off (terrible I know) – and then sit on the porch pulling off petals and playing the “he loves me, he loves me not” game. I’m not sure who’s love it was that I cared so much about back when I was 8 years old – but I do know that if I didn’t like the end result… well- I’d just go back, rip off another flower, and do it all over again until I did. My poor grandma… I bet she was wondering why her flowers were disappearing so quickly. It’s a silly game- if that’s even the right word to use for it- definitely not something I do anymore. But it does make me wonder about love…
Sometimes people’s love for one another may quickly change just as the result on that flower petal may change depending on the flower that you choose. People won’t always love you, even if you wish they did. You might not always love you, I know I have my days when I don’t love myself all too much. But although people’s love and your own love may be conditional, there is someone who’s love for you will never change. You don’t have to guess whether He loves you or He loves you not… the end result will always be the same no matter what- He loves you. It doesn’t matter if you’re having a bad day and messed up big-time, it doesn’t matter if life isn’t going the way you planned, it doesn’t even matter if nobody else seems to love you – He does, and He always will.
God’s love has always been a mystery to me. Sometimes I doubt that He even cares, especially when life is hard and I think the only place my prayer is reaching is the ceiling. But He loves me, and He loves you – no matter how you may feel at the moment. And the beautiful thing about God’s love is it’s not something any one of us deserves. It’s not something any one of us can earn. You don’t get any brownie points for memorizing the most scripture or praying the longest. Because He loved you before the beginning of time. He chose to love you and give you a future with Him in eternity by sending His own son to die for you and create a way to Him… even if you never choose to love Him back. Now that’s what I call real love. Love I can rely on. Love I can hold on to. Love I never have to doubt. If you ever questioned if someone really cares about you in every single way… let me answer that question for you. Someone does. His name is Jesus. And His love for you is written all over the pages of the Bible…
“Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever” (Psalm 136:26).
“I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness” (Jeremiah 31:3).
“Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God” (Ephesians 5:2).
Be blessed. And remember… you ARE unconditionally loved! :)
