He loves me…he loves me not…
I remember those hot summer days (which rarely happen in Washington) when I was a little girl – I would spend the night at my grandma’s house and just chill outside in the backyard during my free time. She had flowers all around her house and one of my favorite things to do was go rip one off (terrible I know) – and then sit on the porch pulling off petals and playing the “he loves me, he loves me not” game. I’m not sure who’s love it was that I cared so much about back when I was 8 years old – but I do know that if I didn’t like the end result… well- I’d just go back, rip off another flower, and do it all over again until I did. My poor grandma… I bet she was wondering why her flowers were disappearing so quickly. It’s a silly game- if that’s even the right word to use for it- definitely not something I do anymore. But it does make me wonder about love…
Sometimes people’s love for one another may quickly change just as the result on that flower petal may change depending on the flower that you choose. People won’t always love you, even if you wish they did. You might not always love you, I know I have my days when I don’t love myself all too much. But although people’s love and your own love may be conditional, there is someone who’s love for you will never change. You don’t have to guess whether He loves you or He loves you not… the end result will always be the same no matter what- He loves you. It doesn’t matter if you’re having a bad day and messed up big-time, it doesn’t matter if life isn’t going the way you planned, it doesn’t even matter if nobody else seems to love you – He does, and He always will.
God’s love has always been a mystery to me. Sometimes I doubt that He even cares, especially when life is hard and I think the only place my prayer is reaching is the ceiling. But He loves me, and He loves you – no matter how you may feel at the moment. And the beautiful thing about God’s love is it’s not something any one of us deserves. It’s not something any one of us can earn. You don’t get any brownie points for memorizing the most scripture or praying the longest. Because He loved you before the beginning of time. He chose to love you and give you a future with Him in eternity by sending His own son to die for you and create a way to Him… even if you never choose to love Him back. Now that’s what I call real love. Love I can rely on. Love I can hold on to. Love I never have to doubt. If you ever questioned if someone really cares about you in every single way… let me answer that question for you. Someone does. His name is Jesus. And His love for you is written all over the pages of the Bible…
“Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever” (Psalm 136:26).
“I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness” (Jeremiah 31:3).
“Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God” (Ephesians 5:2).
